How to be a Real-Life Superhero

After being a Real-Life Superhero for over 4 years, Downtown Batman wrote a basic guide to help people start their own RLSH careers. It is highly recommended that you read the guide and reference it for your involvement with Community Heroes, even if you are well-established in your RLSH career.

The guide can help you polish your mission statement, manage your hero/alter ego life balance, and more. Find it here.

How to Join Community Heroes

Applying for membership is a simple but multi-step process that helps us ensure that all the costumed activists on our team can be trusted to do the right thing. Membership to Community Heroes is free after a one-time $30 fee to cover background checks. If you have any questions or concerns before getting started, feel free to reach out via our Contact page.

Step 1

Fill out our questionnaire and share your previous experience, any standout moments, your email, among other things.

Step 2

If we think you would be a good fit for Community Heroes after reviewing your questionnaire response, our outreach coordinator will contact you to schedule a virtual meeting to get to know you more and discuss the details about how you and Community Heroes would work together.

Step 3

If all goes well, our outreach coordinator will invite you to fill out a background check via Checkr, a well-known and widely respected third-party service. This background check involves a Social Security Number trace, a search of sex offender registries, a global watchlist search, and a national criminal database search. We know how important secret identities are, so for your protection and privacy we limit access to these background checks to only the outreach coordinator, who interprets the results to the rest of our leadership team.

Step 4

Once your background check finishes, our outreach coordinator will inform the leadership team of the results. If your background check comes back clean, you’ll be made a member of Community Heroes and our outreach coordinator will begin working with you to get in touch with nonprofits and other organizations in your area for collaboration opportunities.
